We're in a world of trouble — design can save us!

The Index Award biennale celebrates people, from far and wide, using design to solve the problems that matter — what we call Design to Improve Life. Since 2005, we’ve recognised some of the world’s most impactful and iconic solutions. From tiny tools that diagnose disease to environmental moonshots saving our most vulnerable ecosystems.

Notable past winners include LifeStraw (2005), the Tesla Roadster (2007), Kiva (2009), Hövding (2011), Raspberry Pi (2013), The Ocean Cleanup Array (2015), Zipline (2017) MARSHA (2019), Algorithmic Justice League (2021) and many more.

The Index Award isn't just about upholding great designs but about celebrating diversity, inspiring hope and, acting as a catalyst for groundbreaking innovation. It takes all types to design a future that works for everyone, that's why we're always on the lookout for the next game-changers — whoever you might be!

Nominating a solution is free and easy, all you need to do is register online and follow the prompts. You can enter your own project, nominate on behalf of others or simply send us a tip if you think there's something we should know about.

Going beyond the UN's SDGs?

We’re not alone in this endeavour: the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a given for any business or organisation wanting to do their part in shaping a better future. But, the world is evolving quickly, and not all of life's challenges can be encompassed in a neat package of 17 targets. The Design to Improve Life Goals go beyond SDGs to chase that moving target, identifying new opportunities for change as, or even before, they arise.

Our goals are derived from speaking with hundreds of people within our global community, from young designers to thought-leaders in business. We penned our first five goals in 2016 and our additional three in 2020, a process we plan to continue every four years to ensure a proactive approach to tackling global challenges.
