When the winners of INDEX: Award are celebrated on September 1st this year, their victory will have been decided by an international jury of design and innovation experts. Four new prominent members have been appointed this year and, due to the award rotation rules, we will say farewell to chairman Mikal Hallstrup, Founder and CEO of Designit, and Dutch design visionary Daan Roosegaarde.
The new jury chairman Philip Battin, who took part in our 2011 Summer School, is currently a Senior Design Strategist at Google. Canadian Devin Cook, from MIT, is an executive producer for the Inclusive Innovation Challenge, a renowned program working to ‘reinvent the future of work’ using technology. Hailing from Santiago, Chile, is Alejandra Amenábar Figueroa – Dean of the Design Faculty at Universidad del Desarrollo, and chairwoman of the Chilean Design Biennale. And the most recent addition is Danish architect and industrial designer Anders Smith, an accomplished solution designer with more than 30 years of international experience.

“Mikal has been a great jury chairman for the past four years,” said our CEO Kigge Hvid. “He’s a man with experience from the centre of Danish and international design, whom I thank for a huge effort.”
While Mikal’s shoes are certainly big ones to fill, Kigge is more than confident that Philip is up to the task.
“Philip is a young talented designer and entrepreneur working with Google – he is truly at the forefront of design to improve life,” she said. “This makes him the perfect chairman to bring INDEX: Award safely and quickly into the future.”
The Danish national, who now resides in Oakland, California, says he is delighted to take the reigns.
“I look forward to being part of a world-class jury that rewards design that is not only beautiful, but that helps to make the world a better place and inspire designers worldwide,” Philip said.
“For me, INDEX: Award is the most important design award in the world – I can’t wait to get started.”
Although Mikal regrets his departure from the INDEX: Award jury, he does see a bright future ahead.
“After four hugely inspiring years as chairman of the INDEX: Award jury, it’s time to make way for new blood,” he explained. “INDEX: Award is a strong and relevant global platform for some of the world’s most visionary ideas, “To promote design that pushes boundaries and solves challenges is the way forward – and even more important than ever.”
All 14, new and seasoned, jury members will convene for the first time on May 19th where they’ll begin the exciting process of finding the winners of INDEX: Award 2017!
