Ringkøbing-Skjern Kulturcenter was flooded with creativity yesterday as we welcomed over 300 participants including students, educators, jury members, and guests for this years battle event of the Aarhus 2017 Design to Improve Life Challenge.
Last month 40 fourth-grade classes throughout Mid-Jutland worked tirelessly to design their solutions to address the first community challenge of ‘Climate Adaptation – a focus on water’. Through a voting process the jury panels then chose 20 finalists to take part in the final battle event yesterday.
“The feeling in the class room throughout this project has been great,” said attending teacher Karin Nielsen from Saksild Skole, Odder Municipality. “The children really felt that what they were doing was important, they are taking it very seriously, and their engagement has been extraordinary.”
“Everybody – even the quiet children – were very active. This project will mean a lot to the class – also in the long term,” she added.
Under a sky of balloon cloud sculptures and hosted by Danish TV personality, Sigurd Kongshøj, the afternoon was filled with entertaining presentations, interviews, and dozens of inspiring projects. After an open exhibition where participants had a chance to browse the designs and talk with the students, the jury then choose 10 finalists to present four-minute pitches in a final bid to be named winners of the Aarhus 2017 Design to Improve Life Challenge.
With such a high-standard of projects it was a tough decision for the jury and people’s choice voters, but at the end of the day the three winners were announced and presented with their prizes by the Mayor of Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, Iver Enevoldsen.
The winners this year included:
- Aarhus 2017 Design to Improve Life Challenge Winners (Prize – DKK 30,000): “Grusfaskiner ved vejkant” (Gravel gabions along the roadside) by Sønderlandsskolen from Holstebro Municipality
- The People’s Choice Award (Prize – cinema gift certificate for the entire class): “Bobble Jump” (Bubble Jump) by Spjald Skole from Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality
- The Best Support Team Award (Prize – DKK 1,000): “Kloakturbine” (Sewer Turbine) by Saksild Skole from Odder Municipality
A huge congratulations to all of the winners, finalists, and all classes who participated in the challenge. Photographs and videos will soon be available via our website.
