Q&A: INDEX + Montreal Design Declaration

Our Head of Future Thinking and Technology Mariano Alesandro was recently in Montreal, Canada for the 2017 World Design Summit: an “international gathering of how design can shape the future”. We were there representing Denmark, along with our BLOX neighbours the International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP).

The Summit featured a broad range of inspiring exhibitions, talks, discussions, and one more very important thing – the signing of the first Montreal Design Declaration.

So, what was it all about and why it is so important? We asked Mariano to found out.

Q: What’s special about this summit?

A: Without a doubt, the most important thing is the fact that the design community, across all of its disciplines, came together as one to state the design can, and should, play an important role in addressing the world’s pressing global challenges.

Q: In 20 words or less, what’s the declaration about?

A: Recognizing the role of design to create a world that is environmentally sustainable, economically viable, socially equitable, and culturally diverse.

Q: Why is it needed?

A: It’s not enough to have individual efforts. The global design community has understood that design is more than white tea-cups, it is also a tool to be used to solve the world’s global challenges, and joining forces is the best way to move forward.

Q: How will INDEX: play a role in the future?

A: The declaration has a project’s annex, ranging from metrics to education, to support and ensure that the implementation of the Declaration. INDEX: could contribute in many of these projects, though it is still too early to say which ones.

Q: How can the average Joe get involved?

A: Read the declaration, share it, and contribute to the goals from a personal perspective.
